Fish of the Columbia River

Carp

Cyprinus carpio
Cyprinus = after the island of Cyprus, whence carp were introduced throughout Europe
carpio = carp

Body
Adult length is generally 12 to 30 inches (30.5 to 76.2 cm), and weight is 2.5 to 20 pounds (0.4 to 9.1 kg). (There is a recording of a carp weighing 50 pounds 923 kg) in the state of Washington!)

Food
Their food generally consists largely of bottom organisms such as crustaceans, larvae and nymphs of aquatic insects, worms, small snails, algae, and plant fragments.

Carp are found in ponds, lakes, streams, and rivers. They are not often eaten by other species and are not used for sport or commerical fishing purposes. In other words, they do not appear to contribute to the economic productivity of any lake. They spawn in June and July in protected weedy shallows. Spawning is accompanied by loud splashing.
